Anthropic is still grappling with the economics of compute

· Technology · TechCrunch

Anthropic disclosed Monday that its compute costs reached $10 billion in the quarter through September 30, up from $5.5 billion in the prior quarter, driving compute margins to 58% of revenue from 48% previously. Revenue jumped to $17 billion from $11.5 billion, but operating losses widened as the company scrambled for compute capacity, relying on short-term commitments with SpaceX, Nscale, Akamai and Volta that cost significantly more than multi-year deals. The filing shows revenue per dollar of compute fell to 1.72x after peaking above 2x, reflecting the pressure of scaling infrastructure to meet surging demand. Anthropic expects compute and infrastructure expenses to increase in absolute dollars, remaining its largest cost category as it inches toward an IPO.

Why it matters

Anthropic's widening compute margins directly pressure its path to profitability, meaning a larger share of every revenue dollar is consumed by infrastructure costs rather than margin — a critical concern for IPO investors assessing the sustainability of the AI lab's rapid scaling model.
