Anthropic Researcher Quits, Warning AI Safety Is Being Gambled

· Technology · Times of India, Fortune

Jacob Coxon, a 27-year-old researcher, has resigned from Anthropic after working on pretraining for OpenAI and Anthropic. In a viral post on X, he stated that critical decisions regarding the safety of superintelligent AI are being made by engineers in San Francisco rather than in controlled, high-security environments. Coxon alleged that senior leaders at major AI labs privately believe artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity by the end of the decade, despite more cautious public messaging. Evan Hubinger, who leads alignment stress testing at Anthropic, publicly supported Coxon's assessment of the risks. The company has not yet established a definitive plan for aligning superintelligent systems, according to Hubinger.

Why it matters

The resignation of safety-focused researchers from leading AI firms raises concerns about the internal stability and risk-management strategies of companies developing potentially transformative technology.
