Anthropic's Seven Founders Could Gain Billions in $2 Trillion IPO
· Technology · New York Times, Fortune, Outlook India
Anthropic, the San Francisco artificial intelligence startup behind the Claude chatbot, is preparing for an initial public offering that could value the company at $2 trillion, potentially making it the largest IPO ever. The seven founders, who left OpenAI in 2021 over disagreements about how AI should be developed, stand to become tech billionaires. CEO Dario Amodei, 43, has publicly clashed with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over AI use in autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance, and recently dined privately with President Trump. Amodei grew up in San Francisco's Mission District with his sister Daniela, also a founder, and holds a doctorate in biophysics and computational neuroscience from Princeton. In September, Amodei published a 3,800-word essay calling for a global slowdown in AI development.
Why it matters
A record-breaking Anthropic IPO would cement AI as the dominant value driver in tech markets and concentrate immense wealth and influence among a small group of former OpenAI researchers who now shape global AI safety policy.
