Major music publishers Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell have filed a multibillion-dollar lawsuit against AI startup Anthropic in a California court. The complaint alleges the company misused tens of thousands of copyrighted songs, including works by Mariah Carey, Marvin Gaye, and Survivor, to train its Claude AI models. Plaintiffs claim Anthropic scraped, downloaded, and reproduced lyrics without authorization to avoid paying licensing fees. The lawsuit also names chief executive Dario Amodei and co-founder Benjamin Mann as defendants.
