Anthropic Unveils First Molecular Biology Discovery Made Autonomous by Claude AI

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has unveiled its first major molecular biology discovery, identifying a previously unknown enzyme system using autonomous software agents powered by its Claude model. Approximately 950 Claude-powered software agents combed through a DNA sequence database for 21 hours, identifying over 200,000 genes for a specific enzyme type and selecting 20 candidates for laboratory testing. Researchers restricted their involvement to initial instructions and physical lab experiments, leaving the AI agents to autonomously determine which leads to pursue. One agent uncovered a unique DNA repeat pattern in bacteria-infecting viruses situated near a known enzyme gene and a mystery protein, resembling a natural defense system similar to CRISPR. Chief Dario Amodei highlighted the milestone during an address to the UN Security Council as evidence of AI accelerating basic scientific research.
