Apple Drops HomeOS Name, Chooses HomeView Software for Smart Display
· Technology · MacRumors, The Hindu
MacRumors reported on October 13, 2026, that Apple decided against using the 'homeOS' name for its upcoming smart display operating system. The company will instead use the generic term 'HomeView software', similar to how it refers to the HomePod's operating system as 'HomePod software'. MacRumors had previously revealed the name 'HomeView' after discovering a trademark filing linked to Apple through a secretive shell company. The device will ship with 'HomeView software version 27.2'.
Why it matters
This naming decision affects developers and consumers expecting a branded OS for Apple's smart display, potentially creating confusion about software updates and compatibility. It signals Apple's preference for descriptive, product-specific software names over standalone operating system branding for certain devices.
