Apple I 'Hatfield' Computer Signed by Wozniak Fetches Record $1.15 Million at Auction

· Technology · Engadget, MacRumors

An original Apple I "Hatfield" computer signed by co-founder Steve Wozniak has sold for a record $1,148,200 at a Bonhams auction to an unknown buyer. Built in 1976 and originally sold for $666.60 to Fred Hatfield, the machine is one of only 74 verified Apple I models remaining and one of the few still in working condition. The lot includes an operation manual, a cassette operating manual, an invitation to join the Apple I Owners Club, a custom power supply, a period monitor, and keyboards. Notably, the machine comes with a letter from Steve Jobs encouraging Hatfield to upgrade his motherboard to an Apple II. Hatfield declined the offer and later sold the machine for $40,000, using the funds to pay for dinners and nights out in New Orleans.

Why it matters

The sale highlights the surging collector value of early computing milestones and the historical significance of Apple's founding era.
