Apple Introduces Reference Image Feature to Prove iPhone Photo Authenticity

· Technology · TechCrunch

Apple announced a new feature called Apple Reference Image during its Surprise and Shine event to verify the authenticity of photos taken on iPhones. The main camera sensor captures signed sensor data alongside the image, which Apple's Private Cloud Compute service converts into an unalterable reference image viewable in the Photos app. This digital negative can be compared with other versions of a photo to detect any alterations or manipulation. Apple is also making APIs available to developers so they can integrate the feature into third-party applications. Additionally, the company announced support for the SynthID standard to help identify AI-generated or altered images.
