A US jury has ordered Apple to pay $5.7 billion in damages after finding the company infringed on two patents held by audio firm Taction Technology. The lawsuit, which began in 2021, alleged that Apple used Taction's haptic vibration technology in its iPhone and Apple Watch devices without authorization. Apple has denied the claims, stating its proprietary Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from the technology in question and confirming it will appeal the verdict. While a San Diego judge initially ruled in Apple's favor in 2023, a federal appeal circuit later allowed the case to proceed to the recent jury trial. The jury did not find that the patent infringement was willful.
