Apple Pay Set for India Launch With Axis Bank
· Technology · The Hindu, Reuters
Apple is preparing to introduce its Apple Pay service in India next month, starting with a partnership with Mumbai-based Axis Bank. The service will allow iPhone users to make tap-and-pay transactions using tokenised card details stored on their devices. While Apple has engaged in discussions with HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, those institutions have not yet reached an agreement on commercial terms. The launch will mark Apple's entry into a digital payments market currently dominated by the home-grown Unified Payments Interface, which accounts for 84% of transaction volumes. Apple's expansion follows a 2025 regulatory update from the Reserve Bank of India that permitted biometric authentication for card payments.
Why it matters
The launch provides iPhone users in India with a native tap-and-pay option, intensifying competition within the country's crowded digital payments sector.
