Apple Phases Out Intel Support and Legacy Tools in macOS Golden Gate
· Technology · MacRumors, Engadget
Apple has released macOS Golden Gate, marking the first version of the operating system to run exclusively on Apple silicon Macs while ending support for Intel-based computers. The update removes the Boot Camp Assistant and phases out the Apple Filing Protocol, which also ends Time Capsule backup support. Additionally, AirPort Utility is no longer included in the installation package, and Rosetta 2 support is temporarily retained before being largely removed in macOS 28. Users relying on Rosetta will receive warning prompts when running affected apps, with a dedicated settings menu provided to track compatibility. Apple plans to continue offering security updates for Intel Macs running macOS Tahoe through fall 2028.
Why it matters
The transition forces users of older Intel hardware and legacy software to upgrade or find alternative virtualization tools, marking a major milestone in Apple's hardware architecture shift.
