Apple is developing a wall-mounted smart home display that will serve as a central hub for controlling home appliances, conducting FaceTime calls, and running apps using a touch-based interface. Codenamed J490, the device is designed to mount on walls or sit on desks and relies heavily on a newly developed operating system featuring a grid of icons similar to the Apple Watch and iPhone home screen. The product is slated for release as early as March 2025, positioning Apple to compete directly with established smart displays from Amazon and Google. The interface incorporates proximity sensors to adjust information density based on how close a user is standing to the screen, while processing critical smart-home tasks locally on the device using Apple Intelligence features.
