Apple Removes Jack Dorsey-Backed App Bitchat From India App Store
· Technology · Economic Times, TechCrunch, NDTV
Apple has removed offline messaging app Bitchat from its India App Store following a takedown order issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under Section 69A of the IT Act. Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey posted a screenshot of the Apple App Review notice on X confirming the removal. Apple stated in the notice that the app included content deemed illegal in India, though it did not specify which particular content or statutory ground was invoked. The app and its TestFlight versions are no longer available for public use or internal testing in the country. The platform previously faced restrictions in July when the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre ordered GitHub to block access to related files during protests.
Why it matters
The ban restricts Indian users from accessing the Jack Dorsey-backed decentralized messaging tool amid heightened regulatory scrutiny over digital platforms.
