Arizona Opens New Taiwan Representative Office Despite Opposition From China

· World · The Independent, Fortune

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and Taiwanese leaders opened a new economic and cultural office in Phoenix on Monday. The office, Taiwan's 14th in the US, aims to foster collaboration in technology and semiconductor manufacturing while supporting local Taiwanese migrants. The opening proceeded despite receiving two letters in July and August from China's consulate general in Los Angeles urging state officials to abandon the plan. Governor Hobbs defended the move, stating that elected officials must support the partnership as Taiwanese companies expand operations in the state. Semiconductor giant TSMC has pledged $100 billion to expand its facility in northern Phoenix, bringing its total investment in the city to $265 billion.
