Assam approves ₹600cr proton beam therapy unit at GMCH

The Assam cabinet approved a ₹600 crore proton beam therapy unit for cancer treatment at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam will be the first state in India to introduce this advanced treatment in the public healthcare sector. Currently, only two private hospitals in Mumbai and Chennai offer this therapy globally. The World Bank will provide a ₹315 crore loan, with the state government contributing ₹285 crore. The unit will also aim to attract medical tourism once operational.
