Assam CM Sarma says gherao threat by MLA-led group endangers family; will raise in Supreme Court

· India · The Hindu, NDTV

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday a group led by a legislator has threatened to gherao his Guwahati residence if bail is granted to two prime accused in the Zubeen Garg death case, calling it a danger to his family and a potential attempt to murder. Sarma said the state government honours court orders and will bring the threat to the notice of the Supreme Court and Gauhati High Court. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear bail petitions of Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddhartha Sharma on November 30. The Gauhati High Court earlier granted bail to singer Amritprava Mahanta and Sandipan Garg in the same case. Sarma noted the High Court bail order stated 160 witnesses did not name Amritprava Mahanta during the hearing despite naming her in the SIT investigation.

Why it matters

The chief minister's allegation that an MLA-led group is threatening his residence over a high-profile criminal case raises serious law-and-order concerns and could influence how the Supreme Court handles the pending bail hearings.
