Assam-Meghalaya Road Blockade Continues for Second Day

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times

Cab operators in Assam have continued to block the entry of Meghalaya-registered vehicles on the Guwahati-Shillong road for the second consecutive day on Friday. The protest follows attacks on Assam-registered vehicles during a Khasi Students’ Union rally in Shillong on August 19. Members of the Assam State Drivers’ Association are demanding compensation for damaged vehicles and guarantees against future violence. In retaliation, Meghalaya taxi operators have prevented Assam-registered vehicles from entering their state at Byrnihat. The blockade has disrupted the movement of passengers and goods along a critical route connecting Meghalaya to the rest of the country.

Why it matters

The blockade has severed a vital transport artery, severely impacting commuters and goods movement between Assam and Meghalaya while causing significant delays for those traveling to Guwahati airport and railway stations.
