Assam Student Found Dead Near Railway Tracks After Reporting Inebriated Men on Train

· India · Times of India, The Hindu

Himashri Boro, a 20-year-old student from Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district, was travelling alone on Train No. 22503 from Visakhapatnam to Guwahati on October 6, 2026, after a dance competition. She told her family and a friend that she felt unsafe in the S-2 coach due to the presence of inebriated men around her and shared a video of the compartment. Contact with her was lost between 2:30am and 3am on October 6, prompting her family to alert railway authorities. Her body was later found near railway tracks in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh, on October 9, 2026. Her family has alleged murder and accused the Railway Protection Force of negligence, demanding a thorough investigation. The Northeast Frontier Railway stated that a preliminary probe by the Government Railway Police in Palasa prima facie suggested she might have fallen from a moving train.

Why it matters

The case raises serious concerns about the safety of women passengers, particularly those travelling alone on Indian trains, and highlights potential gaps in railway security and response systems. It also underscores the need for accountability in investigations involving allegations of misconduct and institutional negligence.
