Assam Transporters Blockade Meghalaya Vehicles After Shillong Violence

· India · The Hindu, NDTV, Hindustan Times

Transporters in Assam blocked entry and exit points for Meghalaya-registered vehicles along the Guwahati-Shillong road at Jorabat following a violent student rally in Shillong. Members of the Assam State Drivers’ Association halted traffic while exempting ambulances and patient transport. The protests followed a Khasi Students’ Union black-flag bike rally on Wednesday where masked participants targeted Assam-registered vehicles and assaulted non-locals. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the arrest of three KSU leaders, including president Raymond Kharjana, vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, and general secretary Reuben Najiar. District Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal stated police acted to demonstrate that Shillong condemns the violence.

Why it matters

The transport blockade disrupts vital economic and passenger movement between Assam and Meghalaya along the interstate border. Escalating tensions between local groups threaten inter-community safety and regional transit.
