· India · Hindustan Times, hindustantimes
Delhi Police have identified a 16-year-old girl who was gang-raped and murdered in the Swaroop Nagar area of outer Delhi. Investigators initially misidentified the heavily mutilated body as that of a man due to decomposition and severe injuries, including a missing arm. A tattoo of three stars on the victim's left arm served as the turning point that allowed police to correctly identify her. Four teenagers are accused of the crime, which occurred on September 11. The victim's body was discovered in a field on September 13 after animals were seen attacking the remains.
Why it matters
The brutal nature of this crime and the initial misidentification have drawn significant attention to the safety of minors in the national capital.
