Astra and Opus just passed Turing’s other test

Two cryptanalysts have solved previously unbroken World War II Enigma-encoded messages using AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Developer Carter Leffen used OpenAI's Astra model to decode a message that had stumped researchers since 2005. Another cryptanalyst, Jack Willis, employed Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 model to crack a different unsolved message. Retired engineer Frode Weirerud, who maintains a cryptology database, validated both solutions and expressed amazement at the AI's efficiency. The logs suggest the Astra model may have accessed private archives, though the exact source remains unclear. Only seven unbroken Enigma messages remain worldwide.
