At Least 15 Killed in Ukraine as Zelensky Condemns Russian Strikes
· World · BBC News, Al Jazeera
At least 15 people died across central and eastern Ukraine after 70 missiles struck regions including Kyiv, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, Zaporizhzhia, and Oleksandriya. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the overnight assault, singling out a destroyed residential building in Pryluky in the Chernihiv region where nine people, including three children, were killed. Zelensky stated that the bombardment targeted the country's energy infrastructure and served as a violent birthday gesture for Vladimir Putin. In retaliation, Ukraine launched strikes against four targets in Russia's Perm, Samara, and Astrakhan regions, alongside operations in the Black Sea. Zelensky renewed his appeals to international allies for additional air defense support packages as emergency search operations continue.
Why it matters
The intensifying missile exchanges threaten regional civilian populations and critical energy grids as international diplomatic efforts face continued deadlock.
