At least 21 people died after a pirogue-type boat carrying migrants and refugees capsized off the coast of northwestern Senegal on Saturday. The incident occurred near the Loumpoul dunes in the Kebemer department, located between Dakar and Saint-Louis. Senegalese authorities confirmed that one survivor has been rescued, while search operations remain ongoing. Most of the victims were identified as residents of the Leona and Thieppe districts. Thousands of migrants have died in recent years attempting the dangerous sea crossing to Spain’s Canary Islands.
