· India · The Hindu, Indian Express
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the Kasari-Masari area in Prayagraj, formerly a stronghold of the late gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed, will be renamed Shrikrishnapuri. The government plans to build housing for 1,200 poor families on land previously seized from the mafia leader. The first phase of the project will provide homes to 602 families, followed by 598 in the second phase. During the announcement, Adityanath issued a stern warning against criminal activities in the state.
Why it matters
This project represents a symbolic and physical reclamation of land from organized crime figures, directly providing state-funded housing to low-income residents in Prayagraj.
