August GST Collections Near ₹2 Lakh Crore With 14.8% Year-On-Year Growth

· Business · Hindustan Times, Deccan Herald, deccanherald

India's gross Goods and Services Tax collections reached ₹1,99,853 crore in August 2026, marking a 14.8% increase compared to ₹1,74,116 crore in August 2025. Data released by the finance ministry on Tuesday showed that net collections after refunds stood at ₹1,68,057 crore, reflecting an 8.3% growth over the previous year. Officials attributed the steady revenue performance to economic resilience and effective taxpayer compliance despite higher refunds and imports. The GST Council is expected to meet in New Delhi on September 12 to review rate rationalization and consider proposals for compliance ease. Experts note that monthly collections have stabilized around the ₹2 lakh crore mark following previous rate adjustments.

Why it matters

Strong GST revenue growth points to ongoing robustness in domestic consumption and economic activity, providing fiscal stability for government expenditure.
