· World · The Guardian, Indian Express
Cara Severino, a 25-year-old Australian tourist reported missing after flash floods hit the China-Nepal border, has made contact with her family to confirm she is safe. Severino was hiking the Langtang trek and became stranded when communications were severed by the disaster, which has left at least 469 people dead and more than 1,500 missing. She managed to place a phone call on Friday morning from Gosainkunda after reaching the area with a group of Nepali hikers. She remains on foot and faces a trek of more than 110 km to reach Kathmandu. She is the first of 39 Australians previously reported missing to be confirmed safe.
Why it matters
The contact offers relief amidst a major natural disaster while highlighting ongoing rescue and evacuation challenges for stranded hikers.
