Bangladesh Declines BRICS Outreach Invitation, Citing Lack of PM Invite
· World · Times of India, Hindustan Times
Bangladesh has officially declined an invitation to attend the outreach session of the 18th BRICS Summit, which is scheduled to take place in New Delhi on September 12-13. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir stated that the invitation was extended to the Chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) rather than to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The government clarified that there is no scope for a representative to attend since the Prime Minister himself was not invited. Officials emphasized that Bangladesh is prioritizing a formal bilateral visit to India when the timing is conducive. The decision follows ongoing diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka regarding regional issues and extradition requests.
Why it matters
The refusal highlights the current diplomatic friction between India and Bangladesh, potentially complicating regional cooperation efforts within the BIMSTEC framework.
