Bangladesh Home Minister to Skip BIMSTEC Meet in New Delhi

· World · Hindustan Times, LiveMint

Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed will skip the first-ever meeting of home ministers of the BIMSTEC grouping in New Delhi. A delegation led by a senior bureaucrat will represent Dhaka instead. The meeting of BIMSTEC home ministers is scheduled for Tuesday. Bangladesh assumed the BIMSTEC chairmanship in April 2025. The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Why it matters

The absence signals ongoing strain in India-Bangladesh relations at a time when regional security cooperation is being discussed. It may affect coordination on cross-border issues like terrorism, smuggling and migration management among member states.
