Bangladesh Open To Joining Saudi-Pak-Turkiye Defence Pact

· World · Hindustan Times, India Today, Bloomberg

Bangladesh is open to joining the newly formed defence alliance between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkiye, according to two junior ministers in Dhaka. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kobir stated that any decision would be guided by the country's national interests and a balanced foreign policy. The trilateral pact, signed in Makkah on August 7, establishes a framework for collective deterrence where an attack on one member is considered an attack on all three. Another state minister for foreign affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, echoed these remarks, emphasizing that Dhaka's stance will prioritize the welfare of Bangladeshi citizens. The discussions follow remarks by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's finance adviser regarding a new 'Bangladesh First' foreign policy paradigm.

Why it matters

Dhaka's potential entry into a Saudi-Pak-Turkiye military alliance would significantly alter regional security dynamics in South Asia and impact strategic calculations in New Delhi.
