Bangladesh replaces planned sculptures at Suhrawardy Udyan with water fountains

The Tarique Rahman government has proposed replacing planned sculptures commemorating Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's March 7, 1971 speech and the 1971 Pak forces surrender with water fountains at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka. The initiative is part of a plan to rescope and repurpose the Independence Monument project originally launched in 2018. Suhrawardy Udyan, a 95-acre national memorial originally known as Ramna Race Course, was the site of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historic 1971 independence speech and the Pakistani forces' surrender that December. Work had stalled since the 2024 change of government, and the project remains scheduled for completion in June 2027.
