Bay of Bengal Depression Likely to Intensify and Hit Andhra-Odisha Coast

A depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression and cross the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts between late 23 September and early 24 September. The India Meteorological Department has reported that Odisha is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy downpours, while coastal Andhra Pradesh will see heavy rain on 23 September. Chhattisgarh and Telangana are also forecast to experience intense rainfall during 23-24 September. This weather system coincides with the southwest monsoon's annual withdrawal from northwest India, where conditions remain favourable for further retreat across Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The southwest monsoon season has brought a cumulative rainfall of 703.7 mm between 1 June and 21 September, which is 15% below the normal of 827.2 mm.
