BCCI Considers Expanding Women’s Premier League Teams from Next Season

· Sports · Times of India, Sportstar, NDTV Sports

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is considering increasing the number of teams in the Women’s Premier League starting next year to accommodate a larger pool of talent. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the expansion will be discussed following the WPL 2027 auction in Kochi, where numerous players missed out on selection. The league currently features five teams, with the 2027 season scheduled from January 14 to February 7. Saikia noted that about 150 players competed in the recent auction while only 27 spots were available, highlighting a strong talent supply that exceeds current team capacity. Adding teams and increasing player budgets would allow more domestic cricketers to compete at the highest level.

Why it matters

Expanding the Women’s Premier League will create more roster spots for domestic cricketers who missed selection in the recent auction, directly strengthening the talent pipeline for Indian women's cricket.
