BCCI Wants Sooryavanshi to Build a Tendulkar-Length Career
· Sports · Times of India, NDTV Sports, India Today
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely monitoring 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's development and wants him to emulate Sachin Tendulkar's longevity rather than burn out as a one-series wonder, secretary Devajit Saikia said after Thursday's high-level review meeting in Mumbai. The meeting was attended by India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir and Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman. Sooryavanshi has already gone from an IPL sensation to becoming India's youngest men's international debutant. Saikia said the board is tracking every step of his international career to ensure the right workload and progression decisions are made.
Why it matters
How the BCCI manages Sooryavanshi's early career will shape India's white-ball plans for the next decade and set a template for handling teenage prodigies. His selection, workload and tournament exposure over the coming months will be the first test of that approach.
