Beijing Condemns US Sanctions on Chinese Firms Linked to Ex-Google Engineer
· World · The Independent, Times of India
Beijing expressed firm opposition on Tuesday to US sanctions imposed on five Chinese companies connected to former Google engineer Linwei Ding. The Chinese commerce ministry condemned the penalties as an infringement on the legitimate rights and interests of its businesses and threatened unspecified countermeasures. The US State Department announced the sanctions a day after linking the firms to Ding, who was convicted in January by a federal jury in San Francisco of stealing artificial intelligence trade secrets. Ding founded Shanghai Zhisuan Technology and was sentenced to 12 months in prison after a judge dismissed economic espionage charges, a ruling the Justice Department is currently appealing. China's commerce ministry asserted that its technological advancements stem from independent research rather than intellectual property theft.
Why it matters
The sanctions escalate technological tensions between Washington and Beijing over artificial intelligence research and intellectual property theft.
