Beijing Expected to Become Super-Aged by 2035
· World · The Hindu, Reuters
Beijing is projected to reach super-aged status by 2035, with approximately one-third of its population expected to be aged 60 or older. The Chinese capital recorded 5.29 million permanent residents in this age bracket at the end of last year, accounting for nearly 25% of the city's total population. To manage these demographic shifts, the city government is increasing support for elderly residents, including an expansion of basic pension benefits. China has faced a shrinking population since 2022, a trend that complicates national efforts to stimulate domestic consumption and manage rising debt. Policymakers have made population planning a central component of the country's economic strategy, with the government allocating roughly 180 billion yuan this year toward initiatives aimed at boosting birth rates.
Why it matters
The rapid ageing of Beijing's workforce threatens to slow long-term consumption growth and places significant pressure on pension budgets, forcing the government to balance social support costs with broader economic stability.
