Belgian PM Slams 'Arbitrary' Tariffs, Backs India-EU FTA in Mumbai

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, addressing an India-Belgium high-level dialogue in Mumbai on Friday, criticised countries that impose tariffs "arbitrarily" and "without any economic logic," in a veiled reference to US President Donald Trump's trade policies. De Wever argued that the India-EU Free Trade Agreement would help both economies withstand economic disruption and coercion, and announced a Belgian business delegation from port, logistics, chemical and energy sectors will visit India in February 2027. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal called the FTA a "win-win agreement" that would open opportunities for farmers, start-ups and women entrepreneurs while protecting sensitive sectors. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis pitched the state as the preferred investment destination for Belgian companies, urging them to fast-track Belgium-Maharashtra projects. The event was attended by Indian and Belgian business representatives in Mumbai.
