Bengaluru Considers Points-Based Licence System for Traffic Violators

The Karnataka Home Department is considering a points-based driving licence system and higher fines for repeat traffic offenders in Bengaluru. Home Minister Priyank Kharge and Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh discussed the proposals during a joint review meeting at Vikas Soudha on Wednesday. Officials also discussed integrating the Transport Department’s Sarathi database with the Bengaluru Traffic Police e-challan system for real-time tracking of violations. Under the proposed system, licences would be suspended after motorists cross a specified threshold of penalty points, alongside mandatory road safety training. The government is also examining stricter regulations against non-standard helmets, modified silencers, illegal horns, and low-speed battery-operated electric two-wheelers.
