Bengaluru Drafts Parking Rules With 100% Tax Waiver For Parking Plots

Karnataka has published draft parking rules for Bengaluru that propose paid parking, no-parking restrictions on congested roads, stronger enforcement and a 100% property tax waiver for vacant plots converted into parking facilities. The rules, framed under the proposed Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), are based on the 2021 Bengaluru Parking Policy and are open for public suggestions and objections until September 10, 2026. Bengaluru has more than 1.28 crore registered vehicles, with another 15 to 20 lakh vehicles registered elsewhere but used in the city, putting total fleet numbers close to 1.5 crore. Since vehicles remain parked around 95% of the time, parking management has become a central urban challenge, with parked cars consuming up to half of a road's carrying capacity on narrow Bengaluru streets.
