Bengaluru Police Halt Controversial Gandhi Play After Protests
· India · The Hindu, Indian Express
Bengaluru City Police ordered the management of Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy to suspend all performances of the play "Gandhi Hatyeya Satya" by former Rangayana director Addanda C. Cariappa. The final scheduled show on Monday, November 2, was cancelled after a police notice cited ongoing investigations into complaints and counter-complaints and warned of legal consequences if staging led to law-and-order issues. Protesters disrupted a performance on October 31, throwing ink at Cariappa and lodging a complaint alleging historical distortion and derogatory references. On Monday, protesters allegedly belonging to the Congress confronted Cariappa outside the academy, hurling slippers and demanding his arrest, while a Congress delegation led by Lakshman M. protested at the Police Commissioner's office. Prakash Belawadi of the academy described the incident as unfortunate.
Why it matters
The suspension underscores growing tensions over artistic freedom and political pressure in Karnataka, with the Congress government facing criticism from its own workers for allowing the play to proceed under police protection.
