Bengaluru Woman Held After Twin Daughters Drowned, Suicide Bid

Police in Thalaghattapura, south Bengaluru, registered a murder case against 40-year-old Umadevi, wife of Ramalingappa, for allegedly drowning her four-month-old twin daughters and then attempting to hang herself at their home in BCCHS Layout, Vajarahalli on Tuesday. Ramalingappa, 50, who filed the complaint, returned home in the afternoon to find a room locked from inside; after breaking in, he found Umadevi trying to hang herself with a veil and the twins dead in the same room. Doctors suspect the infants died by drowning. According to the complaint, Umadevi had shown disinterest in caring for the babies since about a month-and-a-half after their May 5 birth via IVF at Cloudnine Hospital, repeatedly saying they should be sent to an ashram. She was taken to NIMHANS, where doctors linked her behaviour to postpartum depression and hormonal imbalance. A case has been registered under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
