Berlin Pulls Out of Germany’s 2036 Summer Olympics Bid Race
· Sports · Sportstar, The Straits Times, straitstimes
Berlin has withdrawn from Germany’s race to host a future Summer Olympics, leaving Munich and the Rhine/Ruhr region as the remaining candidates. The German Olympic Sports Confederation is set to decide on Saturday which region it will back for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Games. Berlin's shift in stance follows Sunday’s city elections, where Die Linke’s lead candidate Elif Eralp stated she does not support an Olympic bid. A DOSB evaluation panel had previously placed Berlin’s bid third behind Munich and the Rhine/Ruhr proposals. City officials have scheduled a press conference for Thursday to address the decision.
Why it matters
Berlin's withdrawal narrows Germany's Olympic bid contest to Munich and the Rhine/Ruhr region ahead of the German Olympic Sports Confederation's upcoming decision.
