Bezos consortium bought almost 40% of Liverpool

· Sports · BBC Sport, Sportstar

A consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has acquired a stake of approximately 38% in Liverpool FC from Fenway Sports Group. The investment vehicle 1892 Holdings, named after the club's founding year, values the Premier League side between £5bn and £6bn. The group is led by British-Indian millionaire businessman Amit Bhatia and also includes billionaire Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Bhatia will assume the role of Liverpool's vice-chairman and join an expanded board, subject to regulatory approval. The agreement also includes an option for the consortium to acquire a controlling stake in the club within the next 12 months, though this is not a formal commitment.

Why it matters

The transaction brings high-net-worth investors, including Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin, into European football ownership while valuing Liverpool among the world's most expensive sports assets.
