Bhopal Police Bans Protests at Three Key City Locations

· India · Hindustan Times, NDTV

Bhopal police have declared Polytechnic Square, Akashvani Square, and Kilol Park Square as restricted zones for all protests, sit-ins, and demonstrations for the next two months. Police commissioner Sanjay Kumar issued the order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, citing the need to ensure the smooth movement of emergency vehicles and VIPs. These intersections serve as primary routes to essential facilities, including the airport, Hamidia Hospital, and Gandhi Medical College. The administration has not designated an alternative site for public demonstrations. Opposition leader Anand Jat criticized the move, claiming it suppresses public dissent.

Why it matters

The order effectively removes the most prominent protest hubs in Bhopal, limiting the ability of local groups and political organizations to stage demonstrations in the city.
