Bhutan Dedicates Buddhist Stupa to Prime Minister Narendra Modi

· India · The Hindu, Times of India

Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk dedicated Jangchub Chorten Number 76 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 1, 2026. The stupa is one of 108 structures built by 40,000 volunteers in a nine-hour construction effort in Gelephu. The King chose the number 76 to mark the Prime Minister's recent 76th birthday. This initiative serves as the spiritual foundation for the Gelephu Mindfulness City project, which borders the Chirang district of Assam. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju attended the ceremony to represent India.

Why it matters

The dedication reinforces the strong diplomatic and spiritual ties between India and Bhutan as the latter develops its ambitious Gelephu Mindfulness City economic hub.
