Bhutan Glacial Lake Burst Triggers Evacuations Along India's Sankosh River

· World · The Hindu

A glacial lake outburst flood from the Shintaphu lake in Bhutan's Gasa district destroyed infrastructure at the Gasa Tshachu hot springs late Thursday night. Bhutan's National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology is monitoring water levels on the Mochu River while state broadcaster BBS reported two Bailey bridges may have been washed away. No injuries or fatalities have been reported and the area was evacuated before floodwaters arrived. The road to Laya village has been closed indefinitely after being rendered impassable. West Bengal authorities have issued a high alert and evacuation warnings for communities along the Sankosh River downstream in India. A similar flash flood in Nepal near the China border in August killed more than 1,500 people and left over 5,000 missing.

Why it matters

Residents along the Sankosh River in West Bengal face immediate flood risk from a cross-border glacial hazard, while Bhutan's recurring GLOF events threaten tourism infrastructure and mountain communities.
