Bidders for India’s Polymer Banknotes Must Guarantee Security and Purity

· Business · Indian Express

The Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran (P) Ltd has invited bids for the supply of 68,000 reams of polymer substrate for future Indian banknotes. Participating companies must sign an integrity pact and certify that their materials contain no animal tallow or DNA. Bidders are also required to implement strict firewalls to isolate their Indian operations from any business interests in China or Pakistan. The Reserve Bank of India subsidiary has mandated that samples undergo testing across various climatic zones before the final tender process. Among the entities in the running is an Indian firm partnering with the UK-based banknote manufacturer De La Rue.

Why it matters

The transition to polymer currency aims to enhance the durability and security of Indian banknotes, with these strict conditions intended to mitigate geopolitical risks and address public concerns regarding material composition.
