Bihar Drops 'Fail' from Class 10 and 12 Marksheets
· India · Indian Express, The Hindu
The Bihar Education Department has decided to remove the word 'fail' from Class 10 and 12 marksheets, replacing it with the term 'Kaushal ke liye patra' or eligible for skills. Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari announced the decision during a review meeting, stating that an inability to secure expected marks should not reflect a student's talent. The department will amend existing rules and direct the Bihar School Examination Board to implement the change to maintain students' morale. Additionally, authorities plan to introduce month-long special classes for students appearing in Matric supplementary examinations to improve their preparation. The announcement follows other recent changes in the state school system, including the introduction of no-bag days on Saturdays.
Why it matters
The policy change directly impacts lakhs of secondary and higher secondary students in Bihar by removing stigmatising labels from their academic certificates and steering focus toward vocational readiness.
