Bihar Minister Shrawon Kumar Defends Sugar Price Hike Citing Diabetes

Bihar minister Shrawon Kumar faced online backlash after remarking that rising sugar prices do not matter because people suffer from diabetes and eat fewer sweets. According to media reports, sugar prices in Bihar recently crossed ₹65 per kilogram. Retail sugar prices reached up to ₹70 per kg in Kolkata markets according to PTI. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution stated that all-India sugar prices increased from ₹48.18 per kg on July 20 to ₹55.70 per kg on August 20. The government stated that the price rise cannot be attributed to ethanol production and that current season sugar production is expected to reach 306 LMT.
