Bihar on High Alert as Nepal Flash Floods Push Water Into Gandak Basin

· India · Indian Express, NDTV, Times of India

Bihar has put its administration on alert after a glacial lake outburst in Nepal sent flash floods down the Bhotekoshi River, raising water levels in the Trishuli basin that feeds into the Gandak River system on the Indian side. Officials opened all 36 gates at the Valmikinagar barrage as a precaution and dispatched a technical team led by a superintending engineer to monitor flows. Warning messages have been sent to all districts along the Gandak basin, with embankments under continuous inspection and flood-response materials pre-positioned. The state Chief Secretary held an emergency meeting with district magistrates, ordering public-address alerts for residents inside embankments and evacuation arrangements, while teams from the NDRF and State Disaster Response Force are being deployed to potentially affected areas.

Why it matters

Districts along Bihar's Gandak River belt, including residents inside embankments, face an imminent flood risk, and the response will test the state's evacuation machinery and embankment infrastructure as monsoon-fed Himalayan floods become more frequent.
