Bihar Police Clash With Job Protesters Near CM Residence

Police in Patna, Bihar, used water cannons and batons on Tuesday as several thousand unemployed youth and students broke through barricades while marching towards Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary's residence, demanding jobs and transparency in recruitment exams. At least 25 protesters were detained and later released, Patna Police Superintendent Kartikeya K Sharma said, accusing some of stone-pelting and attacking security personnel. The protest, which began last week over unemployment and expanded to include education reform demands, came a month after Gen Z-led demonstrations in New Delhi forced Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign on July 25 over exam irregularities. Following the clashes, a student delegation met Bihar Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit, who said the discussion was "positive" and a response was expected within days.

Bihar's 130 million-strong population is heavily reliant on government jobs for stable employment, and the BJP-led state government now faces the same youth-driven protest wave that already cost the Modi government a cabinet minister in Delhi. Sustained unrest across BJP-ruled states could pressure the party on both hiring policy and exam-system reform before upcoming electoral cycles.
